Hello Mohigan Families!
We hope you’ve had a wonderful summer and are looking forward to a successful 2018-19 school year! Here are a few updates and expectations we hope will help make the return/transition to Morgantown High School as smooth as possible for all of our students and their families.
There have been many facilities improvements that will continue to magnify why MHS is the best school in West Virginia. The recent installation of a state of the art fire alarm system and new functioning stairwell doors will enhance our ability to maintain school safety throughout our campus. Additionally, a redesigned main entrance and office complex has been completed to help direct students and visitors entering our main building in a more efficient and secure manner. Our Edgewood Street entrance has received a facelift and will now provide adequate shelter on days of inclement weather. Student arrival and dismissal will continue to occur on both Edgewood Street and Prairie Avenue. Student arrival each day will begin at 7:00 AM. No doors will be open prior to this time. Please remember all visitors must enter our campus at the main entrance on Prairie Avenue. As always, visitors will need to have photo ID and must sign in at the main office prior to gaining further access to our school.
As you may have noticed, our school website has also been revamped. Please continue to visit our website regularly for updated information and announcements regarding all that is Morgantown High School. For those of you who have Twitter accounts, follow us @ONEMHS. Schoology will replace Engrade as Monongalia County School’s new learning management system. Watch for information regarding setting up parent/guardian accounts to ensure you have this vital link to monitor your student’s academic progress throughout the year.
We will be implementing a school wide “freeze time” during each class period. Freeze time is designed to prioritize instructional time and will encourage students to focus on their daily learning. Simply put, students will be expected to remain in each of their classes for its entirety. However, should a student need to leave class for a specified and justifiable reason, he/she will be permitted to do so during the middle thirty minutes of the class period. All students are expected to carry a visible hall pass signed by their teachers any time they are out of class. As always, students with emergencies, medical or other, will continue to be accommodated as situations arise.
Parents and guardians, we are requesting your assistance with the following expectations designed to maintain a healthy and safe environment for all of our Mohigans.
- We expect that our students will leave items such as blankets and stuffed animals at home. It is imperative that we do all we can to prevent the spread of illness and other contaminants that are common among students in close proximity to one another. We must maintain a healthy and clean environment for students and employees. Anyone in need of warm clothing or outerwear is encouraged to utilize our Mohigans Helping Mohigans student resources.
- Students are permitted to wear sweatshirts with hoods to school. However, we have found that wearing the hoods up impedes our ability to identify individuals once they are inside our campus buildings. Please assist us in reminding your student to keep their hoods down while inside during the school day.
- We wish to remind all students that they will be expected to utilize the lockers assigned to them at the beginning of the school year. We encourage students to properly plan their day and carry only the necessary supplies to and from classes. Personal property such as backpacks are subject to search. Morgantown High School is not responsible for lost or stolen personal items such as cell phones or tablets.
We thank you for your support of these requests and expectations for the 2018-19 academic year and look forward to seeing you all at Mohigan Mania on August 20th from 3-6PM.
