More Information

Good day Mountaineers, this is Principal Nantz with several longer than normal announcements.

Mountaineer PTO is hosting a GLOW Dance on Friday the 13th . It will be from 6:30-8:00 and will cost $5.00 for entry. Snacks and raffles will be available for purchase. No matter what you kids say, we always encourage you to come and chaperone the dance.

A reminder from the nurse – to keep from getting sick or infecting others with your germs, please wash your hand and cough and sneeze in the elbow of your arm. A special thank you to our custodians for deep cleaning the school through this season.

Any 6th grade student that has not gotten their 7th grade shots TDAP and Menactra and health and dental check forms, please turn them into the office as soon as you receive them.

Just a reminder that students are to keep their phones in the lockers at all times. If students have the phones taken they can be picked up by the student at the end of the day. If it becomes a habit then we ask that parents come and pick up the phone and the students will receive lunch detention. Please remind students of our expectations.

Remember that drop off begins at 7:40 and students are tardy at 8:05. Also, if you are picking your child up from school please be here promptly by 3:40.

Please mark the week of May 4-8 for testing with the West Virginia General Summative Assessment (WVGSA). Try to avoid appointments or absences that week. We want our Mountaineers to show what they know.

The remainder of this call is regarding the future of middle school football in Monongalia County.

Due to the lack of participation rate and safety concerns (that go along with the lack of participation), Monongalia County Schools has decided to combine the middle school football feeder systems. The decision to combine the middle school football programs is with the belief that it will help improve the instruction, safety, and development of student athletes at the middle school level and prepare them to play football at the high school level before they lose interest. We will begin this process immediately.

For Mountaineers, this means that we will be combining with Westwood Middle School, and our football program will be known at the University Middle Hawks. Suncrest Middle and South Middle will combine to become the Morgantown Middle Mohigans.

Depending on the numbers, we are hopeful that we will be able to play both Varsity and JV games so that every player will be able to experience the game of football at a competition level appropriate for them to develop in a safe environment. Practice locations, equipment, and uniforms will all be topics of discussions as we work through this process. We already have some ideas and have had discussions with administrators from each school.

The combining of these feeder systems is something that is starting to happen throughout our state. We have researched some of the best football programs throughout our state and most of them have some type of combined system or something similar to what we are wanting to do. Any time change is implemented, it is not always received well. We are asking that everyone keep an open mind and give this a chance to work. As with any change, we will reevaluate this process constantly along the way. Please continue to ask questions and provide feedback as we go through this process to make it the best opportunity for everyone involved.

Have a great week Mountaineers!!
