Since the doors opened in 1979, North Elementary has served the most diverse school population in the Monongalia County Schools’ system. With over 550 students currently enrolled in pre-k through fifth grades, there are over 35 languages spoken by students representing over 30 countries.
North’s most popular learning opportunities are offered through their garden-based programs, centered around the school’s beautiful high tunnel greenhouse and outdoor classroom. Students, staff and volunteers are afforded time inside and around the greenhouse to “dig into” activities such as general caretaking of the raised-bed gardens, harvesting their farm-to-table crops, and selling them at the local farmers market.
In addition to their greenhouse, North Elementary also has a robust Makerspace. In this room, students can find thier passion and work on everything from sewing and crocheting to coding, 3D printing, and robotics.
North students have opportunities to immerse themselves in band, orchestra, choir, honors art and the Chinese language as part of their daily routines. Popular STEM learning spills into extracurricular activities at North to include interests such as robotics, Legos, coding and gardening to name a few.
During July, the school is open for the 4 week Summer Avalanche programming with course offerings and activities for Pre-K through incoming fifth graders. Summer is a prime time for the growing season and outdoor learning opportunities.
